Learning from jigsaw puzzles: An effective approach for dissertation students

I have previously posted in the blog about comparing puzzles to dissertations, since I am of the view that completing a dissertation can often feel like tackling a complex jigsaw puzzle. Both tasks require patience, strategy, and a methodical approach to piece together a coherent whole. This means we can learn from the experience of completing jigsaw puzzles when approaching dissertations. Here are some effective strategies from the world of jigsaw puzzles that can help you navigate your research and writing process.

1. Divide and conquer Just as you would sort jigsaw pieces by colour and pattern to break the puzzle into manageable sub-tasks, divide your dissertation work into sections. This approach allows you to focus on one part at a time, making the overall task less overwhelming. At the same time, like in a puzzle, it is important not to lose focus on the end goal - develop an entire entire picture.

2. Create the border first In jigsaw puzzles, creating the border first provides a framework to work within. Similarly, focusing on establishing the basic parameters of your research early on can guide your research and writing. Outline your chapters and key points to create a roadmap for your work, even if these are likely to be amended as you progress.

3. Start with straightforward pieces In puzzles, beginning with the pieces that have high-contrast features you can easily correlate. In your dissertation, start with the sections you are most confident about. This will help you build momentum and create small clusters of well developed work that you can extend outward.

4. Connect pieces over time As you progress, connect your clusters to the border you created. In your dissertation, continually integrate new research findings and insights into your existing framework. This iterative process ensures that your work remains cohesive and comprehensive.

5. Use tools and resources Just as jigsaw enthusiasts use tools and resources such as sorting trays and roll-up mats to assist them, leverage databases, methodology books, and tutor support for your dissertation. Accessing quality tools and resources like those included in the Virtual Tutor Resource can provide valuable guidance and help you stay organised.

6. Break tasks into manageable chunks Tackling a puzzle in one go won't work; similarly, breaking your dissertation into manageable tasks is crucial. Set aside dedicated time for each section, be consistent in your commitment and take breaks to maintain your focus and productivity.

By adopting these strategies, dissertation students can approach their research and writing with the same methodical and strategic mindset used in completing complex jigsaw puzzles. Remember, patience and persistence are key to piecing together a successful dissertation.

And of course, if you ever feel like some of the pieces just won’t fit, you don’t have to struggle alone. I offer 1-to-1 dissertation supervision, where we work together to strengthen your structure and ensure all the pieces come together into a clear and compelling whole. Just as an experienced puzzler can help you see connections you might have missed, I can guide you step by step so that your dissertation fits together the best possible way.
